Report on why high school construction stopped for a few days heard by board

As of Monday afternoon, excavation had not started back up. The contractors are waiting for further soil samplings and a lime treatment in order to proceed.

“There are glitches we’re going to run into, but our contractors Smith/Woods is determined to make the June 2003 deadline,” Muchmore said.

Earlier in the month, he also reported the asbestos abatement at Thomas Jefferson Elementary had been completed. The replacement of the modular building at the junior high school was stopped due to soil problems and is still waiting for clearance.

The board heard first readings of revised Governing Board Policies having to do with the district’s grading/assessments systems.

Dr. Black informed the board the revisions would change the grading period from six weeks to nine weeks. He added that the communication between the school and the home will not be lessened in any way.

Black added the change would not affect eligibility for extra-curricular activities. If approved, the nine-week system would begin with the 2003-04 school year.

The board approved awarding a bid to Progressive Roofing to repair and apply a liquid roofing system to Bonnie Brennan and Washington schools’ buildings.

The board also accepted over $1,000 in donations throughout the month:

• $151 from Target’s “Take Charge of Education” program to Washington.

• $61 from the same program to Bonnie Brennan Elementary.

• $45 from General Mills’ “Box Top” program for Bonnie Brennan.

• $100 from Target to the WHS Student Council.

• $163 from the football players’ parents to the WHS Football Club.

• $500 from Wal-Mart to Bonnie Brennan.

Joe Bullmore, Assistant Superintendent of schools reported the district had also received a check in the amount of $30,000 from Chartwell’s, the district’s food service provider. Chartwell’s had guaranteed the district would make money out of their cafeteria, but the district hasn’t seen any profits. The check was part of the agreement.

During the month, the board has approved the hiring of Nora Mesa, part-time special education aide at Washington Elementary, Lyna Burrage, special education bus aid for the district, Kimberly Davis, part-time special education aide at Washington. They also approved hiring Nathan Velez, assistant boy’s basketball coach at the high school, and Cory Lions, eight grade volleyball coach.
