Winslow 20 Camp Verde 14<br>Dawgs advance to next level

The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Camp Verde Cowboys in a first round game of the Arizona State 3A Football Championship Tournament played in Winslow on Friday. The Bulldogs advanced to the quarterfinals to be played in Mesa at 8 p.m. on Friday. Winslow will take a 9-1 record into that contest against the defending Arizona State 3A Champion Blue Ridge Yellowjackets. Camp Verde ended its season with a 6-4 record.

The teams battled on even terms until the mid point of the final quarter when Winslow went on a 60 yard scoring drive to secure the victory. Warren Prosser ran the final three yards for the decisive touchdown.

The Cowboys opened the scoring on a time-consuming 82-yard drive on their first possession. Chase Armstrong scored from 11 yards out and John Dykstra booted the conversion for a 7-0 Cowboy lead with 6:34 left in the period.

Winslow drove deep into Cowboy territory only to lose the ball on downs at the Camp Verde 32 yard line. The quarter ended with the Cowboys still leading 7-0.

The Bulldogs got on the board on a 29-yard run by quarterback Steven Martinez on a fourth and nine play at the 10:07 mark of the second period. The kick failed and Camp Verde still led 7-6.

David McDonald capped an 80-yard Camp Verde drive with a 14 yard run. The conversion kick gave the Cowboys a 14-6 lead with 6:24 remaining before intermission.

Nolan Horn took a shovel pass from Martinez and rambled 11 yards with 3:45 left before the half. Horn ran for the two-point conversion as well to tie the contest at 14-14.

The Bulldogs had a golden opportunity at the end of the half after a Camp Verde punt ended up on the Cowboy 35. Winslow had driven to the Cowboy three when time ran out in the half.

The third quarter was scoreless although Winslow lost a great opportunity when a questionable roughing the passer call against the Bulldogs negated a pass interception by Martinez.

John L. Sullivan blocked a Camp Verde punt at the Winslow 44 early in the third quarter, but the Cowboy defense stiffened and took the ball on downs at their 38-yard line.

The Bulldogs then went on their game winning 60-yard drive midway through the final period. Warren Prosser, who played a huge role in the drive, plunged in from three yards out for the decisive score. The conversion kick failed and the 20-14 final was on the board with 4:55 left in the game.

Prosser ran for 153 yards to pace the Winslow attack. Martinez was close behind with 112 yards rushing and 70 passing. Horn contributed some big offensive yards as well.

The defense was solid with Sullivan, Brian and Brandon Mitchell and Brian Guzman leading the way.

After holding Camp Verde, Winslow took the ball on its own 19 and drove inside the Cowboy 15 while eating up the remaining time on the clock. Martinez took a knee on the final snap with the crowd cheering, “We want Blue Ridge.”

The Yellowjackets will be Winslow’s second round opponent after a 21-0 win over Payson at Blue Ridge.

Other first round action saw the Coolidge Bears pound the Holbrook Roadrunners 71-0 at Coolidge. The Bears will meet Wickenburg, a 32-14 winner over the Seton Catholic Sentinels.  Top seeded Snowflake crushed Window Rock 71-0 at Snowflake and will meet a familiar opponent in the Show Low Cougars in the second round. Show Low defeated Sedona Red Rock 35-14. Those games will be played on Thursday at Mesa Community College.

Globe defeated Higley 46-7 and will meet Willcox, 44-6 winners over Hopi High School at Polacca. That will be the 5 p.m. game on Friday at Mesa Community College with the Winslow-Blue Ridge re-match to follow.
