Winslow takes Holbrook 53-30

The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Holbrook Roadrunners 53-30 in their final game of the regular season at Holbrook on Saturday. Winslow claimed the 3A North Region Championship with a perfect 7-0 regional record and finished the regular season 8-1. Holbrook finished the regular season 5-4 and was 5-2 in the 3A North. Winslow will host a first round state play-off on Friday. Holbrook will be on the road in the first round of the state play-offs as the 3A North Region’s third seed.

Holbrook grabbed an early lead by driving 54 yards on their opening possession. Armando Monges scored on a 27-yard run. The conversion failed and the Roadrunners led 6-0 with 10:54 left in the period.

Winslow answered with a 75-yard drive climaxed by Steven Martinez’s 17-yard run. Mark Spencer converted for a 7-6 Winslow lead with 6:41 remaining.

Holbrook lost a fumble at their own 37-yard line and Nolan Horn ran five yards for Winslow’s second touchdown. The conversion was good and the Bulldogs led 14-6 after the first period of play.

Warren Prosser ran two yards for the first points of the second period following another Holbrook fumble. The Bulldogs led 20-6 after the conversion failed.

Holbrook cut the margin to 20-12 on Michael Watson’s seven-yard run. The conversion failed.

Winslow scored on a one yard run by Horn and led 27-12 after the conversion kick was good. The Bulldogs stopped Holbrook on downs at the nine-yard line and took that lead to the locker room.

The Bulldogs drove 72 yards to start the second half and scored on Horn’s 19-yard run. The kick failed and Winslow led 33-12 with 8:45 left in the third period.

Holbrook intercepted a Winslow pass and ran it back to the Bulldogs 20-yard one. Tyrone Greer then ran 13 yards for the touchdown that cut the Winslow lead to 33-18.

Warren Prosser climaxed a 70-yard Winslow drive with a three yard run. After the conversion kick Winslow led 40-18, which was the score at the end of the third period.

Greer scored for Holbrook on a 28-yard run on the first play of the fourth period. The conversion failed and Winslow led 40-24.

Orlando Vargas scored on a one-yard run to give the Bulldogs a 46-24 lead after the conversion failed.

Monges scored Holbrook’s final points on a five yard run with 4:15 left in the game. The conversion failed and Winslow led 46-30.

Prosser scored Winslow’s last touchdown on a one yard run with 1:46 remaining on the clock. The conversion kick made the final score 53-30.

Winslow will host a state play-off game at 7 p.m. on Friday.
