McHood Park To Get Facelift

The Arizona State Parks Department’s State Lake Improvement Committee recently awarded $240,000 toward improvements at Winslow’s McHood Park.

The park, which is located off of Hwy 99, was first operated by Navajo County until the City of Winslow took it over in the early 1990s.

The funds will be used to renovate the campgrounds at the park.

The park currently has 15 campsites, which the city had not allowed anyone to use because of their poor condition. The money will be used to improve these sites, along with adding 15 new ones to the area.

The campsites will feature an asphalt slab for RVs to park on, but will not have water or sewer hook-ups. Once the campsites are completed, the park will be open 24-hours a day.

A swimming beach will also be created near the boat ramps. City Administrator John Roche said the beach would be made of sand for those people who wish to have a relaxing day by the lake.

The park is being redesigned by local architects and Roche estimates the construction would be completed for the summer of 2003.

The city received a grant, similar to this new one, three years ago. Those funds were used to replace the restrooms and to replace the water pumps at the park.
