Winslow Bulldogs 6 <br>Blue Ridge 5

The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Blue Ridge Yellowjackets 6-5 in a non-conference baseball game played at Winslow on March 12. The win left Winslow with a 3-8 record for the season. Three of those losses were to defending 3A Arizona State Champion Fountain Hills, one to defending 3A Nevada State Champion Laughlin and two to 5A teams (Yuma and Yuma Kofa).

Blue Ridge scored a pair in the first inning for a 2-0 lead. The Yellowjackets had two hits, but a costly Winslow error made both runs unearned.

The Bulldogs tied the score at 2-2 in the second on singles by Steven Martinez and Jon Ortiz, a double by Lucas Armenta and a Blue Ridge error.

Winslow took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring four times on singles by Seth Davis, Martinez and Nathan Garner, a double by Michael Beeson, a walk and a Blue Ridge error.

The Yellowjackets scored a pair of unearned runs in the sixth on a single and two errors. That cut the Winslow lead to 6-4 and a final Blue Ridge run in the seventh put the 6-5 final score on the board. Blue Ridge had two hits in the seventh and Winslow committed its sixth error, but the Bulldogs turned a game-ending double play to secure the victory.

Martinez went the distance for the win, allowing eight hits. All of the Yellowjacket runs were unearned.

Martinez also had two hits in three trips to lead the Winslow attack at the plate. Beeson and Armenta were each one for three with each of their hits being a double. Ortiz was one for two. Garner was one for three and Davis was one for four.

The Bulldogs were to play a double header at Seton Catholic on Saturday and will be at Snowflake today (March 20). Winslow will host Coconino on Thursday.
