Lady Bulldogs Use Extra Innings To Defeat Blue Ridge Yellowjackets 7-6

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Blue Ridge Lady Yellowjackets 7-6 in a 12-inning non-conference softball game played in Winslow on March 12. The win left the Lady Bulldogs with a 4-4 record for the season.

Erica Armenta led off the 12th inning with a single and scored when Joanna Panana bunted her to second and the Blue Ridge first baseman threw wild as Armenta raced for third. It was fitting that the winning run scored on an error as only three of the previous 12 runs were earned. Blue Ridge had 11 hits, but only one earned run. Winslow committed nine errors in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs had seven hits and were aided by six Blue Ridge errors. Two of Winslow’s runs were earned.

Daphne Barton went the full 12 innings for the victory. She got stronger as the game progressed, allowing only one of Blue Ridge’s 11 hits after the fourth inning. She was aided late by two great plays as center fielder Danee Estudillo threw out two batters at first base.

Winslow grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first inning on singles by Armenta and Rae Begay and four huge Blue Ridge errors.

The Lady Yellowjackets scored a pair in the second on three hits and three Winslow miscues.

Winslow scored in the second on Armenta’s second single, two wild pitches and a ground out.

Blue Ridge had three hits in the third inning, but managed only one run to cut the Winslow lead to 5-3.

The Lady Yellowjackets had three more hits and benefited from two Winslow errors in the fourth to score three runs and take a 6-5 lead.

Winslow tied the game in the fifth on a walk and a clutch single by Nicole Curnutte. The score stayed knotted until the 12th, as both pitchers became more effective.

Armenta led the Winslow attack with a three for five performance. Curnutte was two for three. Begay and Tessa Ramsey were each one for five.

The Lady Bulldogs will play at Snowflake today (March 20) and participate in the Kingman Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
