Lady Bulldogs Split Pair At Fountain Hills

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs split a pair of non-conference softball games with the Fountain Hills Lady Falcons at Fountain Hills on Saturday. The Lady Falcons won the opening contest 4-2, but Winslow claimed the nightcap 7-5. The Lady Bulldogs finished the week with a 3-4 record. Fountain Hills was 3-2.

Fountain Hills scored two first inning runs in the opening contest on a single, an error and a walk. Winslow cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth on a walk, a steal and a pair of sacrifice bunts.

The Lady Falcons rapped out four hits in the fifth inning, but stellar defense including the throwing out of a runner at third kept the damage to a minimum.

Winslow scored in the seventh on a pair of walks and two base hits, but saw the rally fall short on a line drive to short that turned into an game ending double play.

Erica Armenta was one for one with a pair of walks for Winslow. Daphne Barton was one for two and Courtney Smythe was one for three.

Barton went the distance on the mound as she did in the second game as well.

Winslow scored first in the second game on a walk, a wild pitch, a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt.

The Lady Bulldogs increased their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third on three straight singles.

Fountain Hills cut the margin to 2-1 in the bottom of the third on a hit and an error.

Winslow opened a commanding lead in the next two innings, scoring one in the fourth on two hits and four in the fifth on two hits, a hit batsman and a walk. Barton’s triple knocked in three of the four runs scored in the fifth inning.

Armenta led the way at the plate with a three for three performance. She was a perfect four for four for the day and had five stolen bases. Danee Estudillo was two for three. Barton had her triple in four at bats. Tessa Ramsey had a single in four trips to the plate.

Barton went the distance again to collect the victory.

Winslow was slated to play Blue Ridge on Tuesday in another non-conference game. The next scheduled game is not until March 20 at Snowflake.
