‘Dogs Drop Pair At Fountain Hills

The Fountain Hills Falcons won a pair of non-conference baseball games from the Winslow Bulldogs at Fountain Hills on Saturday.

The first game was a close 7-6 affair that saw Winslow rally for four runs in their final at bat. The second contest was a 10-4 Falcon win in which the victors scored seven runs in the fifth inning. Winslow fell to 2-7 for the season with their third loss to the defending Arizona State 3A Champions.

Mike Beeson paced Winslow in the first game with a three for four performance that included a home run and two runs batted in. Fernando Lopez had a three-run homer in the seventh that brought the Bulldogs within one. He was one for three. Nathan Garner was three for four with a double. Steven Martinez had a double in three trips. Lucas Armenta and Joseph Sanchez were each one for three.

Lopez worked the first four innings and took the loss. Armenta allowed only one hit in two innings of work.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Beeson’s homer and upped the margin to 2-0 in the top of the third on singles by Sanchez, Garner and Beeson. Fountain Hills struck for six runs on six hits and a walk in the bottom of the third, then scored again for a 7-2 lead in the fourth on an error and a stolen base.

Winslow made it close in the seventh on doubles by Martinez and Garner, a single by Beeson and Lopez’s homer.

In the second game, the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a Lopez single and four walks. The Falcons got one back in the bottom of the frame on three walks and a sacrifice fly. Winslow upped the lead to 4-1 in the fourth on a Jon Ortiz single, a double by Garner and two walks.

The Falcons won the game in the fifth inning as they scored seven runs on two doubles, a single, a walk and four Winslow errors, which left Fountain Hills with an 8-4 lead. The final two runs scored in the sixth inning on a single and three walks.

Jorge Sander worked four and two thirds innings and took the loss. Armenta, Lambert Dixson and Martinez worked in relief.

Matt Gose led the ‘Dogs at the plate with a two for three day that included a double. Garner was one for two with a pair of RBI’s. Ortiz and Martinez were each one for three and Lopez was one for four.

The Bulldogs were slated to host Blue Ridge on Tuesday and will play Seton Catholic in Chandler on Saturday. The team’s next appearance will be on March 20 in Snowflake.
