Hopi High School Lady Bruins Team Selected

By Stan Bindell

Polacca, Ariz.-Hopi High School Softball Coach Dirk Wirth hopes for the best this coming softball season as the Lady Bruins will be competing in the 3A North for the first time. But Coach Wirth doesn’t know what to expect for his team’s first year in the league because he doesn’t have much to gage it by.

Last year, Hopi beat Greyhills, but lost to Tuba City. The rest of the teams in the league are not known to Hopi as the Lady Bruins have never played Holbrook or Winslow and haven’t played Window Rock, Ganado or Monument Valley for many years.

With 11 returners, including six seniors, Coach Wirth hopes that the Lady Bruins experience will mean that Hopi will be competitive. Coach Wirth has already selected his starting lineup.

Chassity Gould will start at first base with Zondra Mahle as the substitute. Savannah Spurlock will start at second with Staci Myron and Delaine Numkena as the backups. Marie Koopee will start at shortstop with Candice Poleahla as the fill in. Thomasita Silas will start at third with Lenita Poncho and Zondra Mahle as backups.

Lenita Poncho will start in leftfield with Elva Lalo waiting in the wings. Tessa Beatty will roam centerfield with Cecilia Poneoma and Chassity Gould as the backups. Tori Yazzie will be stationed in right field. Candice Poleahla will start as catcher with Alva John waiting in the wings. Zondra Mahle, Marie Koopee, Thomasita Silas, Eva Bahnimptewa and Jackie Tsosie will take turns pitching.
