Bulldogs Baseball Began 2002 Season At Mohave Tournament

The Winslow High School Bulldogs baseball team began their 2002 season by participating in the tough Mohave Invitational Tournament. The young Bulldog squad won two games and lost four while facing formidable competition that included two 5A schools, two 4A schools and two 3A teams each of which happened to be defending state champions (Fountain Hills from Arizona and Laughlin from Nevada). Tournament games were five innings in length.

Winslow lost 11-0 to 5A Yuma in a game in which Yuma’s Sam Schilders limited the Bulldogs to a fourth inning single by Seth Davis. 4A Flagstaff scored three unearned runs and nipped the Bulldogs 3-1. Davis had a single and scored Winslow’s only run. Michael Beeson and Jon Ortiz also hit safely. Fernando Lopez did not allow an earned run and gave up only three hits in five innings of work and deserved a better fate. Fountain Hills pounded Winslow 21-6 as the Bulldogs hammered out nine hits themselves. Davis and Beeson were each two for three with a triple. Nathan Garner was two for three with a double. Lyle Brown, Ortiz and Lucas Armenta were all one for two.

The Bulldogs nipped Sinagua 5-4 behind senior hurler Jorge Sander who allowed four runs on four hits. Davis continued to lead the hit paraded with a three for three performance. Garner was two for three. Brown was one for one and Beeson had a double in three trips to the plate.

Yuma Kofa scored 10 runs in the fourth inning (all but one unearned) on their way to an 11-9 victory over the Bulldogs. Steven Martinez deserved a better fate, giving up only nine hits and two earned runs. Davis and Brown were two for three and Garner was two for four with a double. Martinez was one for one, Beeson one for three and Lopez one for four.

Winslow defeated Laughlin 9-4 behind Armenta and Lambert Dixson. Dixson worked two and a third scoreless innings to earn the victory. Davis, Beeson and Martinez were all two for three with Martinez having a double and a triple and Beeson a triple. Matt Gose had a double in two trips. Dominic Perez was one for two. Lopez had a double in three trips and Brown was also one for three.
