Poetry reading draws small crowd of language lovers

Docia Blalock, Winslow’s librarian, captivates the audience with a poem.

Charlie Rawson, one of the reading’s co-founders, thanked Winslow Junior High for the use of the sound system. He also thanked the Seattle Grind Coffee Shop for hosting the reading.

Rawson explained his desire to give the teens of Winslow a chance to speak their minds, and that is what gave him the idea of the poetry reading.

“I was really interested in giving the young people in town a way to express what they are feeling,” he said. “I wanted to give them a voice.”

Rawson added it was good to have a few adult readers as well.

“One constant thing is that we do not judge the writings, this is not a contest, and we don’t criticize,” Rawson explained. “If it comes from the heart, it’s okay.”

He concluded by saying the poetry reading was only in its infant stage. “We are only hoping to grow.” The next reading is scheduled for next month.
