KUYI – Hopi High Reach Agreement

Polacca, Ariz.-KUYI has received $10,000 that will help train Hopi students in broadcasting and other facets of radio.

Ivan Sidney, president of the Hopi Junior/Senior High School Governing Board, presented Loris Taylor, station manager with KUYI with a check for $10,000 during the Hopi radio station’s recent one-year celebration party.

Hopi Junior/Senior High School made the $10,000 donation as part of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the school and the community radio station. The Hopi Junior/Senior High School Governing Board approved the MOA, including the donation earlier in the day.

Taylor said KUYI would use the funds for training and equipment that students from Hopi Junior/Senior High School can use so they can prepare themselves for careers in radio.

Sidney, who also serves on the KUYI Community Advisory Board, noted that the school’s governing board considered getting a radio station years ago, but when they contacted the Federal Communications Commission they learned that the Hopi Foundation had KUYI in the works.

“This is an opportunity for our students to be involved with broadcasting, public relations, information, Hopi language and culture,” he said. “Some of our students have been involved during the past year, but this is a more formalized agreement to assure that our students get what they need.”

Sidney said KUYI agrees in the MOA to provide students with training and technology as well as promote activities at the school. In return, Hopi Junior/Senior High School will provide in-kind contributions and help with curriculum for radio classes.
