Hopi High Wrestler <br>Tyrone Humehoynewa <br>– State Champion

Phoenix, Ariz.–Hopi High School has a state wrestling champ. Tyrone Humehoynewa won the state championship in the 112 pound category during the 3A wrestling state tournament Feb. 10 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix.

Humehoynewa, a senior, won an 8-4 decision against Sonny Seballos from Safford to win the title. He was the only state championship winner from the 3A North. In the opening round, Humehoynewa beat Nathan Cervantes from Seton Catholic, 3-2 in double overtime. In the second round, Humehoynewa beat Jay Rowlings from Blue Ridge, 6-5. In the semi-final, Humehoynewa beat Anthony Birchak of Sahuarita, 7-5. Hopi’s last state wrestling champ was Alex Youvella in 2A when he claimed the title in the 103 pound division 14 years ago.

Humehoynewa’s victory helped Hopi High to 34 points and an 18th place finish in the 32 team field. Show Low won the team state championship with 197 points. The only teams from the 3A North finishing ahead of Hopi were Holbrook, fourth place, with 129 and Winslow, ninth, 90 points. Monument Valley took 20th with 33, Window Rock placed 22nd with 30, Ganado finished 23rd with 27, Greyhills took 26th with 17 and Tuba City finished 27th with 15.

Wrestlers had to place in the top four at regional in order to qualify for the state meet. Nero Colleteta, a senior at Hopi High, took a sixth place finish in the 152 pound category. Daryn Chosa and Anthony Puhuhesya competed, but did not place. Colleteta and Humehoynewa were both chosen as Outstanding Wrestlers for 3A: Colleteta for the heavyweights and Humehoynewa for the lightweights.
