Tuba City Boys Beat Hopi In Regional Tournament
Tuba City, Ariz. - Tuba City exploded in the third quarter to come from behind and beat Hopi, 54-40, Tuesday night in the 3A North boy’s basketball Regional Tournament.
The Warriors won this defensive battle and will move on to play Ganado. The loss finished the Bruins first season in the 3A North.
Devin Dugi topped Tuba City with 13 points, Robert Morgan pitched in with ten, Ryan Brown netted nine, Michael Justice tossed in a half dozen, Andrew Johnson and William Tewawina chipped in four apiece, Courtney Tsingine and Jose Dastas scored three each and Michael Tsimoga had a deuce.
Dellen Lomayestewa and Chris Hawk paced Hopi with nine each, John Toms and Mack Talashie each scored a half dozen, Anthony Vaughn and Garrick Jones had four each and Thurman Tacheene had a deuce. Hawk poured in seven points in the opening period as Hopi grabbed a 17-7 edge. Dugi and Tewawina tossed in four apiece in the second stanza as the Warriors cut the deficit to 25-21 at intermission.
Jones, Toms, Talashie and Vaughn scored two points each during the quarter as Hopi held its edge. Morgan fired in eight points in the decisive third quarter as Tuba City outscored Hopi by 14 points to grab a 42-32 edge. Brown scored four points in the final frame as the Warriors moved to the victory.
Hopi High Coach Jeff Lambert said the Bruins played strong in the first half, but came out weak in the second half.
He noted that this was the exact opposite of how the Bruins had played the Warriors during the regular season when Tuba City pulled away in the first half and Hopi made comeback attempts in the second half.
