The 2001-02 Tuba City Junior High Chess Team took a Fifth Place trophy home from a final State level competition held in Flagstaff during April.
The chess season for these junior high players began immediately after the Christmas break. They practiced five days a week, which led to nine of 12 twelve players qualifying for the Flagstaff State meet.
The following players completed both days of the competition winning the Fifth Place trophy from the State event:
Adam Clark, Dalton Tsosie, Michael Shepard, Carmalita Tsiniginie, John McIntosh Jr. and Charles Lee. This final state competition consisted of 36 teams from all over the state of Arizona.
Junior High Chess Coach, Barry Silverstein had only high praise for his team, his Principal Richard Grey, and Ms. Janet Tsinigine who is fellow faculty member at TC Junior High who provided guidance and assistance to his chess team.
Chess Coach Silverstein, “ While this win marks the end of the 2001-02 chess season, it was a successful one. Though it ends our formal participation, I have left it open for students to continue playing in my room until the end of the school year.
“I want to congratulate all my team winners and thank Mr. Grey and Ms. Tsinigine for helping these young competitors win this trophy. Though 9 of our 12 were the final competitors, there were other students that were also in this club. They are: Isiah Tso, Kevin Attikai, Sean Tohannie, Nicholas Attikai, Chris Holve and Sheridan Charlie.
