Lady Bulldogs Win Three – Lose Two At Kingman

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs won three games and lost two at the Kingman Invitational Softball Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The Lady ‘Dogs lost their first two contests, but came back to win the next three. The results left Winslow with a 7-7 record for the season.

Winslow lost 5-0 to the Las Vegas Lady Wildcats in their opener and dropped a close 3-2 decision to Coronado before picking up their first victory, an 8-1 triumph over the Needles Lady Mustangs. Winslow’s final game on Friday was a 9-5 win over the Round Valley Lady Elks.

The Lady Bulldogs avenged two earlier losses to Snowflake with a 3-0 victory over the Lady Lobos in their lone Saturday game.

Las Vegas scored runs in the first inning on a single and a triple, and then added three more in the second on three singles and two Winslow errors. The final run scored in the fourth on three singles. Daphne Barton went the distance for the Lady Bulldogs.

Kathy Taylor paced Winslow with two hits in three trips to the plate. Erica Armenta, Barton and Nicole Curnutte were all one for two.

Coronado did all of its scoring in the first inning on two walks, a hit batsman and a single. Kim Garcia, who went the distance for Winslow, settled down and allowed only one single the rest of the game. Coronado did not have a runner reach second base after the first inning.

Winslow cut the lead to 3-1 in the third inning on a single by Danee Estudillo and a Coronado error. The final run of the game scored when Barton tripled and Courtney Smythe singled in the Winslow fourth.

Juliet Sullenberger pitched the Lady Bulldogs to their first victory of the tournament on Friday night with an 8-1 win over the Needles Lady Mustangs. She limited the California team to three singles. Winslow scored in the second inning on the first of several costly Needles errors. The Lady Bulldogs plated three runs in the third inning in which they collected their only two hits of the night, a triple by Curnutte and a single by JoDawn White. Needles also committed two errors in the frame. The lead grew to 8-0 in the fourth as four runs scored on six Lady Mustangs errors. Needles got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on two singles and a walk.

Friday’s final contest was a wild affair as Round Valley scored four first inning runs on three singles and a hit batsman. Winslow cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the frame on singles by Armenta and Estudillo and two walks. Round Valley got its final run in the second on a single and two Winslow errors. The Lady Bulldogs tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the frame on another Estudillo single, two walks and two Round Valley errors. A four-run Winslow third ended the scoring. Taylor and Smythe had singles; there was a hit batsman and two more Round Valley errors in the frame.

Garcia held Snowflake scoreless and allowed only three singles in Winslow’s 3-0 win over the Lady Lobos on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in the first inning without benefit of a hit in the first inning. Four walks and a Snowflake error did the damage. The final run scored in the fifth on singles by Armenta and Estudillo. Garcia had Winslow’s only other base hit.
