The cultural weekend actually began on Monday, Oct. 8, when students at each school in the Winslow school district were invited to wear Native American dress each day throughout the week.

Monday was necklace and rings day, Tuesday was earrings and bracelets days, Wednesday was boots and moccasins, Thursday was sash and concho day and Friday was full dress day.

As part of the cultural weeks, demonstrations were done at each Winslow elementary to show the students various parts of Native American life.

On Wednesday, demonstrations were done at Thomas Jefferson Elementary, Thursday was Bonnie Brennan’s day and Friday’s demonstrations were done at Washington Elementary. Demonstrations illustrated how Navajo Rugs and sash belts are woven, how turquoise jewelry is made, traditional dress of Native Americans and dancing.

To establish Friday, October 12, 2001, as Native American Day, the Mayor and City Council approved a proclamation at their latest meeting.
