Pondering The Pigskin

The Arizona Cardinals (3-6) kept the Detroit Lions (0-8) winless with an entertaining 45-38 victory at Tempe on Sunday. Both teams exceeded their previous scoring and passing yardage highs for the season in the offensive explosion. The Cardinals had a previous high score of 24 and the Lions a previous high of 27. The game was not decided until the final play of the game. The Cardinals will meet the San Diego Chargers (5-5) in San Diego on Nov. 25.

The Arizona Cardinals (4-6) won two games in a row for the first time this season when they defeated the San Diego Chargers (5-6) 20-17 on the next to the last play of the game on Nov. 25 in San Diego. Bill Grammatica connected on a field goal with one second left on the clock. San Diego had missed two short field goals earlier in the contest. Quarterback Jake Plummer had a huge passing day as did Doug Flutie for the Chargers. David Boston was the principal Cardinals receiver. The Cardinals will stay on the road on Sunday when they meet the AFC West-leading Oakland Raiders (8-2) in Oakland. The Raiders defeated the New York Giants 28-10 in a win that could wind up helping re-establish the Cardinals’ faint play-off hopes.

The Arizona Wildcats (5-6) salvaged a small portion of their season on Friday with a 34-21 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils (4-6) at Tempe. The Wildcats built a 20-0 first period lead and were never headed though the Sun Devils narrowed the gap to within a touchdown on two occasions. The Arizona victory assured that neither team would be bowl eligible this season. Arizona has completed its season with a 5-6 record. Arizona State has a make-up game left with UCLA in Los Angeles on Saturday, but can do no better than 5-6 for the season.

The Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks (8-3) ended their regular season with a 45-10 loss to the Oregon State Beavers (5-5) at Corvallis on Saturday in a game postponed earlier in the season due to the terrorist attack. The Beavers were one of the biggest disappointment of the season they entered as Sports Illustrated’s predicted national champion. Oregon State had righted its program in recent week’s after a horrendous start. The Lumberjacks retain hopes of being selected for a post season play-off berth.

The Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona University (8-3) had their season extended by at least one and possibly as many as four games when they were selected for the NCAA Division II Play-offs. The ‘Jacks will meet the Sam Houston State BearKats (9-2) at Huntsville, Texas on Saturday. The BearKats were the champions of the Southland Football League. Northern Arizona finished the season as the second place team in the Big Sky Conference with two of its three losses coming to Division I teams. The Montana Grizzlies, champions of the Big Sky Conference were also selected for the play-offs.
