Hopi and Navajo Heroes in Tuba City
As tragic as September 11, 2001, was for the nation, this atrocity also brought a heightened awareness and pride from many formerly silent communities in our country. Certainly, American Indians have always been extremely proud of their veterans, but this year with September 11 as a violently graphic reminder of foreign invasion, possibly more so.
All across Tuba City which includes Hopi villages of Upper and Lower Moencopi(Mungapi), native students honored their fathers, grandfathers, uncles and brothers, and women in their family in activities related to Veteran’s Day.
Photos of Hopi and Navajo veterans, some deceased, were placed on tables with medals and documents to display their place in American armed forces.
