NAU Museum’s summer seminar series

Our landed legacy Sustainable Ranching , the first of three lectures exploring the relationship between the northern Arizona landscape and its inhabitants will be at Museum of Northern Arizona’s Harvey W. Branigar Hall Thursday, June 7, 4 p.m. Dan Dagget asks, “Can environmentalists also herd cattle?” He describes how innovative ranchers are continuing the ranching tradition with an eye toward the future using the Diablo Trust as an example.

Dagget was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his book, Beyond the Rangeland Conflict: Toward a West That Works, a book about ranchers and environmentalists collaborating to achieve shared goals. For more information, call 520/774-5213.

New 928 Area Code

As of June 23 of this year, Northern Arizona will be changing all area codes from 520 to 928. A grace period, ending January 5th of 2002, extends the time that phone companies will allow calls made through old 520 codes to be placed. After this permissive period, calls and faxes dialed with 520 will not go through.

Houseboat Summer Camp

The Easter Seals Annual Houseboat Summer Camps for young adults will be held June 4-8 and June 11-15. Open to young adults ages 13-23 who have disabilities as well those who do not. Independence Day Parade Applications

Applications are being accepted for the Flagstaff Independence Day parade, which will be held Wednesday, July 4, beginning at 10 a.m. In honor of Route 66’s 75th anniversary, the parade theme will be “ Route 66: Flagstaff’s Highway to History.”

The parade is one of fourteen events occurring during the eleven-days of Flagstaff’s Fabulous Fourth Activities.

The parade is open to groups, clubs, organizations and individuals who wish to celebrate Independence Day. There is no entry fee. Parade applications are available at the Chamber of Commerce, 101 W. Route 66, or call 774-4505 for more information. Entry deadline is June 12.

Poetry Contest, $1000 prize

The New York poetry Alliance is sponsoring Poetry 2001, a free contest open to everyone. A $1000 cash prize will be awarded to the winner, with 28 prizes total. Deadline is June 18. The theme is “love” either religious or romantic. Biennial Play Competition

San Juan College in Farmington is accepting entries to a play competition. The winner will see his or her play performed by the San Juan College Theater Department in the spring of 2002 as part of the annual “Studio Scenes”. Original plays must be one act, may deal with any subject and may not have been previously performed. Entrants may submit up to two plays. Individual submissions only, no class assignments accepted. Each play must be mailed separately and without binders. First place winner receives $300 and will have a full mounted production. Second and third place winners will have their plays presented in a reader’s format at the discretion of the director, and receive $200 and $100, respectively. Readers will screen the plays, with finalists to be judged by all readers. Winners announced January 15, 2002. Entries must be postmarked by October 1, 2001.
