Diamondback Review<br>

The Arizona Diamondbacks remained in first place following their latest homestand. The brief three game series in Kansas City saw Arizona take two of three from the Royals. Only a lack of timely hitting prevented a sweep. Randy Johnson won on June 8, 11-4, with Luiz Gonzalez blasting the long ball to provide most of the offense.

Armando Reynoso pitched well enough to win on June 9, but the D-Back bats were silent until the eighth inning. Kansas City held on for a 3-2 victory as the game ended with the tying run at second.

Robert Ellis won 12-5 in the June 10 finale. Ellis is just one of several players who have made the most of their chances to play at the Major League level!

Curt Schilling was seeking his 11th victory on June 12, but found instead a 6-2 defeat by the Cubs. It was only his second of the season

Diamondback batters seem to have forgotten how to manufacture runs. The team was 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position and failed several times to score a runner from third with less than two outs. The Cubs took advantage of occasion to prove themselves legitimate contenders.

The team that could do nothing right on Tuesday manufactured seven runs in two innings on Wednesday on its way to a 13-3 win over the Cubs. Rookie pitcher Nick Bierbald earned his first Major League victory.

The Diamondbacks used the squeeze bunt, hit and run and fake bunt successfully in a brilliant display of National League-style baseball at its best.

Randy Johnson was a 3-2 winner in the finale with the Cubs. Catcher Damien Miller’s bases loaded double was the biggest hit of the contest.

The brief homestand ended on Sunday as the Diamondbacks and Detroit Tigers completed a three-game weekend series. After Monday off, important Western Division action resumed. The D-backs met the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine on Tuesday and will complete that series on Thursday. Then it is on to Colorado for four games with the Rockies.

The next home series will begin on Monday with the Houston Astros providing the opposition. Another series with the always potent Rockies will follow.
