Mary Jean Finkle

Mary Jean Finkle, daughter of Elizabeth and Robert Evans, died Sunday, July 8th, 2001 at home in Eureka, California, in the loving presence of her family. Mary Jean is survived by her devoted husband, Eugene Donald Finkle, her son, Eric, and his wife, Mitchell, of Eureka, CA, her son, Harry, his wife, Sally, and their son, Carson, of Menlo Park, CA and her daughter, Cedar Finkle-Weaver, her partner, Jen, and their daughter, Ella, of Seattle, and her loving sister, Jerri Cyr, of Fountain Hills, AZ.

Mary Jean was born August 16, 1928, at home in Winslow, Arizona. She graduated from Winslow High School in Winslow Arizona in 1946. She received her nurse’s training from St. Luke’s Nursing School in San Francisco in 1949, where she met her husband, Gene. She received her Bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College in the Bay Area and received her Master’s degree in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling from Santa Clara University in 1979. She worked as a therapist at Redwoods Rural Health Center in Redway, California until 1998 when she retired.

Mary Jean and Gene enjoyed a most wonderful, fairy tale like, relationship for over fifty years. She loved her children, relishing every opportunity to spend time with them. She loved gardening, Thai Chi, long walks, tennis, all kinds of animals, and singing with the Golden Aires. She spread warmth, love and cheer wherever she went and will be dearly missed.

A memorial, in celebration of her life, was held for Mary Jean on Saturday, July 14, 2001, from 1:00-3:00pm, at the Eureka Woman’s Club, 1531 J Street, Eureka, California.

Jerome Jackson

Holy Rosary for Jerome Jackson was hell on Tuesday, July 10, 2001 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Celebrant was Father Mike Mack.

Mass of Christian Burial was held July 11 at St. Joseph’s. Interment was at the Desert View Cemetery.

Jerome died on July 4, 2001 in Holbrook, Ariz. He was born on November 3, 1942, in Teesto, Ariz. into the Big Water Clan for the Salt People Clan. Jerome attended schools at Fort Wingate High School, Holbrook Mission School and Intermountain High School.

He was a Navajo Artist, a Medicinal Herb Collector, activist and teachers. As a traditional Native American, he accepted the responsibility of representing his people at the International level, supporting his tribes right to land and sovereignty.

In 1994, he was an ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva where he spoke against the United States Government’s relocation of the Navajo People. He was a wise man and his life will be inspiration to all people, but especially young Navajos and other Native American who struggle to find peace and justice as well as cultural identity.

Survivors included his mother, Roseline Jackson, father, Harry Jackson, brothers, Paul Jackson of Teesto, Earl Jackson of Teesto; sisters, Alice J. Paul of Teesto, Evangeline Chase of Dilcon, Mary Louise Jackson of Teesto and Mary Rose Jackson of Phoenix.

Jerome was preceded in death by his brother, Leonard Jackson.

The family received friends and relative after the burial service at Roseline Jackson’s residence in Teesto.

Arrangements were under the direction of Greer’s Scott Mortuary of Winslow.
