Lady Bulldogs beat Window Rock, lose to Tuba City by one point in overtime

The Lady Bulldogs stayed undefeated in regional play with a 53-39 victory over the Window Rock Lady Scouts in a basketball game played at Winslow on Friday. Window Rock fell to 11-9 for the season and 3-4 in regional play.

Window Rock led 10-9 after the opening period of play, but Winslow had moved ahead 23-18 at the intermission on the strength of 12 second period points by senior star Francine McCurtain. The Lady Bulldogs had extended their lead to 38-25 by the end of the third period.

McCurtain finished with 18 points to lead all scorers. Window Rock sophomore sensation Roberta Haskie was the only other player from either team to score in double digits with 15 points for the Lady Scouts.

Tuba City 47 Lady Bulldogs 46 battling for Region lead

The Tuba City Lady Warriors defeated the Winslow Lady Bulldogs 47-46 in an overtime thriller at Winslow on Saturday. The game left Tuba City alone in first place in the Enchantment Region with a record of 9-0 in the region and 21-3 for the season. Winslow fell to 8-1 in the region and 18-3 for the season. The two teams will play tonight (Jan. 31) in Tuba City in a game that was postponed on Jan. 12 due to a snowstorm.

Winslow started strong and led 9-0 before the Lady Warriors got on the scoreboard. The Lady Bulldogs led 15-8 after the first period and 21-20 at the intermission. Tuba City led 35-33 entering the fourth quarter. The score was tied at 43-43 at the end of regulation.

Tammie Secody scored the final points of the game for Tuba City with 13.1 seconds left in overtime. Winslow had an open three-point attempt in the closing seconds but it bounced off the rim and the buzzer sounded.

Winslow's Francine McCurtain was the game's leading scorer with 20 points, including four three-pointers. She also connected on four two-point field goals, but did not have a free throw attempt. Nicole Begaii was also in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points.

Jayme Lomakema led Tuba City with 14 points. Secody and Amy North were also in double digits for the Lady Warriors with 12 points each.
