Chamber of Commerce hears from Casper Baca and receives award from Just Cruis'n

Casper Baca was at the early morning Board meeting of the Chamber of Commerce Jan. 11 at Darlene's Restaurant to present his program for the nine week rodeo season in March and April. The Chamber is one of the major sponsors of the Baca Roughstock rodeo in Winslow.

Last year the rodeo was only here for five weeks. With the extension to nine weeks, costs are greater and George Stegmeir, president of the Chamber Board proposed that the Chamber double its sponsorship money for the rodeo. The Board, after discussion, decided to vote the same amount as last year and hold a special meeting to discuss the additional funding.

This will be the Silver Anniversary year of the Baca Roughstock Rodeo and several special events are planned. Baca said that he is in touch with the many riders who have gone on to pro rodeo fame and expects to see a number of them here for the celebrations.

Judi Gill told the Chamber that several magazines, including Arizona Highways and Sunset planned to list the rodeo events and also send photographers.

The Chamber Board welcomed the Executive Director Arlene Petranovich back with applause. She said her daughter was getting along fine with her baby sitter.

Arlene accepted the award given the Chamber by Just Cruis'n Car Club. Just Cruis'n said they appreciated the help the Chamber has given them this past year. Jim Pate, car club president presented the award.

Randy Bombardier, city Director of Economic Development and Community Services, told the Chamber that he was working on a Fly-in event at the airport. He told Pate they would like to tie this in with the next Just Cruis'n Car show which is also going to be the weekend of the Standin on the Corner Park reunion.

George Stegmeir said that the Relay For Life will be held on May 18 this year, the weekend after Mother's Day. County Treasurer Manny Hernandez is the chairperson. Interested volunteers are asked to join the meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Holiday Inn Express.
