Controller Sander leaving Winslow Memorial for County position

The Winslow Memorial Hospital Board of Directors met on Thursday at the hospital and heard the last financial report from Controller Rick Sander. Sander said that he would be leaving the hospital on Jan. 15 to begin a career with the Navajo County Treasurer's Office. The board expressed its regrets at his pending departure.

Administrator Anita Warboys reported that community discount cards which will entitle the user to discounts from participating merchants for a one-year period will be available for sale in the near future. She said that 15 local merchants have agreed to offer discounts as listed on the cards for the entire calendar year. The cards will be sold by some hospital employees among others and will sell for $15 each. Cash prizes will be offered to the two employees who sell the most cards.

The funds raised from the project will be used to establish nursing scholarships in an effort to alleviate the current nursing shortage at Winslow Memorial (a problem that is being experienced at hospitals all over the United States). The project should be of value to both the customers who purchase the cards and the merchants who participate. More importantly, it will address a critical need of the hospital and the community in a way that should yield long term benefits.

Merchants participating in the discount card program include Rent-A-Flick, Adobe Inn Restaurant, Arby's, Big "O" Tire Company, Captain Tony's, Casa Blanca, Country Market Buffet (Flying J), Denny's, Desert Rose Goat Soap, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut, Senor "D's" (Pilot), Sonic Drive In, Taco Bell and Timeless Treasure's Floral and Gifts.

Sander stated that revenue for the last two months have been down, due primarily to the absence of a surgeon. He noted that while the hospital had experienced a loss for that period, the loss was less than expected.

Warboys reported that employees have signed a confidentiality agreement that will make it easier for the hospital to comply with the new patient's privacy regulations. The agreement addresses computer privacy as well.

Chairman Gordon McHood presided over the meeting. Loren Hardy, Larry Pane, Joe Estudillo and Bill Mead were also present. Rhonda Greer and Adrienne Sanchez were absent. The next meeting of the board of directors is scheduled for Jan. 31.
