CLARKDALE—Hopi Junior High basketball fans rushed the court after Delvin Huma sank a lay-up with two seconds to go in the game, as Hopi Junior High School edged Baboquivari, 56-54, to win the boys basketball Arizona Small Schools Junior High School State Championship. The Little Bruins finished the season with 19 wins in 23 games. Hopi won this tournament 15 years ago when it was first created, but this is its first championship since that opener.
Baboquivari scored the first basket of the game, but after that, Hopi led the entire game until the Cougars tied it with 24 seconds remaining. Hopi then missed shot. Baboquivari came down with a chance to win, but missed their shot. Hopi’s Harry Kitso rebounded and saw teammate Huma streaking toward the basket, so he fired the ball to him and Huma sank the winning basket despite having a defender on him.
Michael Schjang topped the Little Bruins with 26 points, Harry Kitso and Delvin Huma tossed in a dozen each, Mikah Kewanimptewa, Stet Lomayestewa and Arnold Lomatewama added four points apiece. Travis Zazueta paced Baboquivari with 16 points, Lyle Ramon tossed in ten, Nathan Manuel netted nine, Ashley Jones and Jose Zazueta scored eight each and Joseph Mease added three.
In the semi-final game, Hopi Junior High edged Red Mesa, 43-39.
