Winslow schools plan for $8 million in Student's First renovations

The School Facilities Student's First projects slated for Winslow add up to $8 million. They include the serving kitchen and evaporative coolers at Bonnie Brennan. There will be work on the "subsiding slab" at Jefferson School along with plumbing and sewer line repair, electrical panel replacements, a lighting upgrade and work on the serving kitchen at Jefferson. At Washington School plans include work on the leaking fire sprinkler system.

Winslow Junior High School will have work on its plumbing, an electrical panel replacement, carpet replacement and repairs to areas of water damage.

The biggest single project is building replacement for Winslow High School. This is projected to be 28 rooms and community input will be sought for both placement of the new building and use for the old building at Winslow High. In addition there will be kitchen renovation for the Junior/Senior High complex, water heater, electrical system, lighting level and water line work targeted for the high school.

Team leader for the projects for the schools is Gary Muchmore. Pinnacle One was selected by the State Board of Education to be project manager for northeastern Arizona and will have an on-the-ground manager from Flagstaff working with the Winslow Unified School District. Mr. Dan McCausland of Pinnacle One spoke to the Governing Board at its Feb. 7 meeting and said that Winslow was coming in on these projects ahead of the curve. This will give the district an advantage in both labor and materials.

The governing Board voted to appoint Member Royce Greer to the Student's First Steering Committee.

During the Governing Board meeting the principals of each school also discussed their work on establishing new guidelines for both staff and students for "bullying." Each school has made progress and more is expected. there will be a workshop held at Washington School for all three elementary schools on Feb. 16. The workshop is entitled "Bullying Prevention." Some of the materials being used in the school now come from the earlier workshop arranged by Julia Ayres where Cheryl Watkins of Student Assistance Training International held day-long sessions with junior and senior high students and staff and an evening session open to staff and the public.

Board members expressed their appreciation for the work being done by the leadership team and the district staff. This is reflected in work from the class room to the busses.
