Alchesay, Ariz. - The Hopi High School girls basketball team won two of six games at the Alchesay girls basketball tournament despite having four players with injuries. The Lady Bruins have won nine and lost five this season.
Hopi High fell to St. Michaels, 62-45, in the opening round sending them into the losers bracket. The Lady Bruins demolished Cibecue, 73-28, before falling to San Carlos, 62-60, and Window Rock, 44-39.
Hopi beat Baboquivari, 70-32, before losing a heartbreaker to Ganado, 57-56. In the Ganado game, Hannah Honani led Hopi with 19, Jvette Yoyokie threw in a dozen, Mallory Shattuck chipped in with nine, Chassity Gould and Trisha Tenakhongva tossed in six each and Zondra Mahle and Tara Secakuku scored a deuce apiece.
Ganado’s Melissa Peterson topped the Lady Hornets with 25 points, Waynette Taylor tossed in eight, Jolene Benally chipped in with seven, Tawna Kee and Tashina Baker added a half dozen apiece, Hope Willie netted three and Nazbah Joseph scored a deuce. Peterson poured in seven points in the opening period as Ganado grabbed a 15-9 edge.
The Lady Bruins outscored them the rest of the way, but not enough to makeup the difference. Gould and Shattuck netted four each in the second stanza as Hopi pulled within 28-23 at intermission.
