Pondering The Pigskin

The Arizona Cardinals (5-7) fell 20-10 to the Washington Redskins (6-6) in Tempe and all but ended their already faint play-off hopes. Arizona’s offense failed to take advantage of several scoring opportunities. A pair of dropped passes in the end zone and a missed field goal attempt kept the Cardinals from taking an early lead. Arizona also failed to score after a first and goal at the Redskins five yard line late in the game. One Washington score came after a Cardinal pass bounced off the receiver for an interception.

Philadelphia (8-4) defeated San Diego to move three full games ahead of the Cardinals in the NFL East with only four games left in the regular season. The Cardinals are technically still in the race for a wild card, but even a sweep of their four remaining games wouldn’t guarantee such a result. Anything less would surely not be good enough.

The Cardinals will play next against the Giants (5-7) in New York. The Giants were losers to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, a loss that put their play-off hopes in the same shape as those of the Cardinals. Arizona will play Dallas on Dec. 23 in their final home game and finish the season on the road at Carolina and Washington.
