Letters to the Editor

Editor,

I am writing about my local school district in Winslow. Their recent actions have upset me as well as disgust me. I have a friend who was interviewed for a position as a teacher in the district but was informed that she had a file from when she substituted 10 years ago, with three letters regarding supposed lack of classroom management. She had only received a copy of one of these letters, but due to the file it was strongly suggested that she not be considered for the position. What upsets us is that she was not considered due to something that happened 10 years ago, yet this same district sees fit to rehire a teacher/coach who knowingly allowed students under his care to be hurt and abused one year ago. Who is the district looking out for? It doesn’t appear to be our children. My friend, Dawn, is an extremely dedicated teacher who goes out of her way to help her students in all areas. She looks out for their safety and well being. This is not necessarily true of the person the district chose to rehire. In addition she is very involved in activities working with our local youth. In the past she has volunteered with the local AYSO soccer league. Currently she serves on the Little League Board and spends many volunteer hours at the Little League Park and she is now volunteering to assist the local people who are trying to get the Skate Park going. She spends more time around some of the youth in Winslow than some of their families. She has proved to be a very good role model for these young people.

I hope the Winslow School District opens it’s eyes and realizes that they should be hiring staff who will look out for the well being and safety of the student in the Winslow School District.

Editor,

It was quite shocking and very inspiring to see both Mayor Jim Boles and Councilwoman Dee Rodriguez leading Winslow City crews and community volunteers in an all-out effort to clean up the Coopertown community recently. Where else but Winslow would you get such involvement and commitment from local elected officials to revitalize the community. We are especially amazed that the Mayor of the City would show up at 7 a.m., sleeves rolled up, and proceed to cut down vegetation, saw off trees, clean up alleyways and rake debris all morning long. We are indebted to both of you, the City and community volunteers, and the Weed and Seed Program for outstanding efforts to turn our neighborhoods around.

We wish to acknowledge the contributions of the City crews and other volunteers. They took time away from their families, on a day usually reserved for the family and for rest, and contributed it for the greater good of the community. We thank Susie Kaufman for organizing the clean up, Gabe Martinez for directing the demolition, Clyde Padilla, Ralph Gonzalez, Art Mazza, Jimmy Galvan, Tom Gilbert, Dan Adair, Raymond Sanchez, David Lucero, James Hernandez and other members of the City crews. We are especially thankful to Bart Gomez from the Weed and Seed program and Luis Flores and volunteers from La Familia neighborhood association.

The City of Winslow is to be commended for the quality of its residents and elected officials and for making Winslow a better place to live in.
