Navajo and Hopi senior center funding is one vital step closer to completion after the Senate Appropriations Committee passed a ‘strike-all’ amendment Wednesday.

Committee Chair Ruth Solomon forestalled lengthy public discussion on the bill and proceeded directly to the vote, saying, “We highly support this bill and very much want it to pass!” The new bill number for Navajo and Hopi senior center appropriation is HB 2485.

The same thing happened with HB 2567, the Hopi radio station appropriation bill, which sailed its way out of committee.

However, these bills are liable to be the only tribal appropriations bills that make it into the law books, unless the House of Representatives manages to jump-start SB 1406, the Hopi TANF appropriations bill.

In other Legislative news: Sen. Andy Nichols, D-Tucson, collapsed and passed away late Thursday evening. Nichols was instrumental in passing legislation related to implementation of Prop. 204, which enables more of the working poor to obtain health benefits under AHCCCS. Nichols was also a long-time proponent of public health policies and funding.
