Rainbow colors and deep sea <br>creatures enthrall students in Leupp Schools library

A new feature was recently added to the Leupp Schools library — it is called the “Sea and Read” reading room. According to Carol Rau, Leupp Schools Librarian, the Sea and Read” room is considered to be somewhat unique because of its special décor geared towards promoting and increasing knowledge. The room was created to serve as the main storytelling and reading room.

“It has vivid colors everywhere and there is a distinct feeling all around it — it’s just a creative room set up for learning,” said Rau.

The room is made up of an array of sea animal décor— dolphins, sharks, seahorse, crab fish — painted throughout the room. On each cupboard has a sea animal and the domed outside wall holds a fisherman’s net filled with seashells. Extra features include a canoe and treasure chest and a blue carpet, which the students call “The Pond.”

Rau said that the purpose of the new room is to help inspire students’ interest in reading, especially at a young age. She added that it is important to get students involved in reading at an early age.

“If we can create an atmosphere that helps make a child’s attitude towards reading better — then why not a “Sea and Read” room,” she said.

Rau said that they wanted it to be a very informal place where a student can just be a student and hang out with a book. Students can stretch out, relax and read.

The new feature is available to serve all students in the school, and while most students who use the room are between Kindergarten and the third grade, Rau said that older kids use the room too. “ All ages seem to love the room.”

Rau said that it took three months to plan the basics of the room, and that she wanted something that wasn’t trendy.

“I wanted something that would last several years— something that all kids could relate to,” she said. “ Most kids are pretty familiar with Sea World and all the underwater sea animals.”

Along with funding from Leupp Schools, Inc., Rau said she received many donations. She solicited the help of the art teacher and several others to decorate and plan the layout.

The “Sea and Read” room just had a grand opening day last week. Around 75 parents and students came out to support the event.

“The kids are just so excited about it. I am just proud that they are enjoying it while they are reading.”
