The Winslow Bulldogs opened Enchantment Region play with a 62-6 drubbing of the outclassed Pinon Eagles in Winslow on Friday. The victory was the second in three outings for Winslow and the first regional contest for both teams. Pinon fell to 0-3.
Winslow scored 35 of its points in the first quarter and turned the game over to the reserves for the remainder of the contest. Pinon did not cross mid-field until the final series of the first half.
David Manthei scored on a 16 yard run after Shawn Mead had returned the opening kickoff 40 yards to the Eagle 36. Brandon Nazario booted the conversion for a 7-0 Winslow lead with 8:36 left in the first period.
Dub Ward scored on a 43 yard run following a Steven Martinez pass interception and Nazario converted for a 14-0 Bulldog lead with 7:20 left in the quarter.
Dustin Taylor scored from four yards out following a Manthei fumble recovery and Nazario's kick made it 21-0 with 5:52 remaining.
William "Bear" Beamon scored Winslow's first defensive touchdown when he stripped the ball from a Pinon runner and jogged 25 yards to pay dirt. Nazario converted for a 28-0 lead with 5:09 still showing on the clock.
Michael Martinez ran 17 yards to score following another Pinon fumble and Nazario's conversion made it 35-0 with 4:14 still left in the period.
A.C. Carter accounted for Winslow's second defensive touchdown with a 28-yard return of a pass interception. Nazario slipped on the conversion attempt and Winslow led 41-0 with 5:03 to go before intermission.
Stephen Pollaca recovered a Winslow fumble in the end zone for the final score of the first half and Nazario's conversion made the half-time score 48-0.
Art Brito returned a punt 67 yards for Winslow's third defensive score with 6:12 left in the third period. Nazario converted for a 55-0 Winslow lead.
Jesse Hancock put Winslow's final points on the board with a one yard run following another Pinon fumble. Nazario's conversion made in 62-0 with 2:53 remaining in the quarter.
Pinon got on the scoreboard on a nine-yard run by Rafael Charlie with 4:32 remaining in the game. The conversion kick was blocked and the 62-6 final was on the board.
The Bulldogs will take on the Monument Valley Mustangs in Kayenta on Friday. Monument Valley defeated Greyhills Academy 32-18 on Friday. Pinon will host the 2A Hopi Bruins in a non-conference contest.
