The Winslow High School Girls Cross Country Team finished fourth at the Hopi Invitational Meet while the WHS boys' team finished fifth. There were 11 teams entered in each event.
Chinle won the boys' meet with Hopi second, St. Michaels third, Alchesay fourth and Winslow fifth, only three points behind the Falcons.
Hopi won the girls' meet with Chinle second, Ganado third and Winslow fourth.
Camelle Begay paced the Winslow girls by finishing 10th in the meet. Michelle Candelaria was 11 and Heather Johnson 12. Other Winslow runners included Lexine Jensen 31, Cherise Lopez 33, Joanna Black 60 and Debra Hancock 64.
Stephen Hancock paced the Winslow boys by finishing 10th. Braden James was 14 and Lawrence Watson was 18. Other Winslow runners included Billy Wilcox 27, Paul Ricks 33, Mark Rostedt 35 and Marcus Williams 50.
Seven Winslow boys ran in the junior varsity meet in which no team scores were kept. Avery Bahe was 25 and Carl Begay was 26. Other Winslow runners included John Pate 33, Ronald Hoover 35, Efrem Yazzie 41, Nicholas Chatter 49 and Charles Gover 72.
The Winslow teams were to participate in the Peaks Invitational in Flagstaff on Saturday and will compete in the Payson Invitational today (Sept. 6) at 3 p.m. The first home meet will be a four-team affair with Snowflake, Show Low and Holbrook visiting on Sept. 13 at 3 p.m.
Coach Georgina Bellman said after the Hopi Invitational that she had been pleased with the team's performance.
