Paul Landis, principal of Bonnie Brennan School, will be the interim varsity basketball coach at Winslow High School for the 2000-2001 season pending board approval. Landis will be replacing Danny Gonzalez who was unable to perform coaching duties due to legal problems stemming from last year's hazing incidents.
Landis was an assistant coach with former WHS coach Richard Bratt before being appointed as principal. He had considerable coaching experience prior to coming to Winslow and has agreed to assume both coaching and principal duties for this school year.
The Winslow Mail learned that Landis had attended a basketball clinic at Arizona State University on Saturday and asked for confirmation that he would be named as the next WHS varsity coach.
Superintendent Dr. David Black confirmed on Monday that the position had been offered to Landis and that he had accepted. Black said that Landis is highly qualified and the right man for the job at this time. He said that arrangements have been made for other administrators to cover Bonnie Brennan School on those occasions when coaching duties require Landis to be absent.
The school board is expected to ratify the appointment at its next meeting on Nov. 1. Basketball practice will begin on Oct. 30 and necessitated a speedy filling of the vacancy.
