The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Greyhills Knights 48-0 in a Enchantment Region game played in Tuba City on Thursday. The Bulldogs improved to 6-2 for the season and completed their regional schedule 5-1. Winslow will host an Arizona State 3A Play-off game on Nov. 3 as a result of its second place finish in the Enchantment Region.
The Bulldogs fumbled away their first two possessions, but capitalized on a Shawn Mead interception at their 39-yard line. Steve Martinez connected with Kendal Ybarra on a 49-yard scoring pass with 6:12 left in the first period. Brandon Nazario booted the first of six conversions for a 7-0 Winslow lead.
Martinez and Mead hooked up on a scoring pass from 25 yards out with only 1:43 left in the period. Nazario converted to give the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead.
Robert Padilla plowed into the end zone from two yards out with 7:48 left in the half an Nazario’s conversion gave Winslow a 21-0 lead.
The Martinez to Mead connection struck for a second time from seven yards out with only 35 seconds left until intermission. Nazaril converted for a 28-0 half-time lead.
David Manthei scored twice in the third period on runs of two yards and one yard to increase the Bulldog advantage to 42-0 at the end of the quarter. Nazario converted successfully after each touchdown.
Winslow coach Matt Gracey decided to let Nazario work on his field goal skills during the final period. The junior nailed a 31-yarder on his first attempt, was wide with a long 54-yarder on his second attempt and converted a 45-yard field goal on his final kick. It was the second consecutive game in which Nazario has booted a 45-yard goal.
