Winslow 29 Tuba City 12

The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Tuba City Warriors 29-12 in an important Enchantment Region game played at Tuba City on Friday. The victory left Winslow with a 5-1 record for the season and a 4-0 mark in the region. Tuba City fell to 4-2 for the season and 1-2 in the region.

Dub Ward got Winslow off to an explosive start and a lead they never relinquished by returning the opening kick-off 84 yards for a touchdown. Brandon Nazario booted the conversion that gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead only 16 seconds into the contest.

The Bulldogs took advantage of good field position and drove 35 yards in five plays for their next score. Steven Martinez passed five yards to David Manthei for the touchdown. Nazario converted for a 14-0 Winslow lead.

Tuba City got on the board late in the first quarter. Josh Allen supplied most of the offense and scored on a four-yard run. The conversion failed and Winslow still led 14-6 after the first period.

A 32-yard field goal by Nazario was the only score of the second period as Winslow took a 17-6 lead into the locker room.

Tuba City saw its leading rusher Allen leave the game with a shoulder injury and missed a 27-yard field goal late in the third quarter.

Michael Martinez ran 64 yards with 1:58 left in the third period to give the Bulldogs a 23-6 lead. The conversion kick failed.

Martinez picked up his second touchdown of the period when he returned a Tuba City punt 51 yards to score on the final play of the third quarter. The kick failed and Winslow led 29-6 going into the final period.

The Warriors completed the scoring with a 31-yard scoring pass that cut the final margin to 29-12.

The Bulldogs will host Ganado on Friday in a game that could determine the Enchantment Region championship. Both teams are undefeated in regional play. Tuba City will host Pinon.

Winslow JV 22 Tuba City 14

The Winslow Junior Varsity football team scored in the final 18 seconds of the game to defeat Tuba City 22-14 and remain undefeated on the season. The Bulldogs had defeated Window Rock 18-12 on Sept. 7 and are 5-0 for the season after their victory over Tuba City on Thursday at Winslow.

Winslow drew first blood on a one-yard run by Tom Taylor with 3:52 remaining in the first period. The play followed a 33-yard pass from Taylor to Shimeon Mattox at the one-yard line. Jesse Hancock ran for the two-point conversion and an 8-0 Bulldog lead.

Art Brito ran 51 yards to score with 9:06 left until intermission and a 14-0 Winslow lead. The conversion run failed.

Tuba City scored with only 19 seconds left until half time on a one-yard run by Rudy Preston. Bedrick Lynch ran for the two-point conversion that cut Winslow lead to 14-8.

The Warriors tied the game with less than a minute left in the third quarter on a one-yard run by Michael Chemerica. Tuba City had taken over on downs at the Winslow three after the Bulldog punter tried to pass following bad snap from that spot. The conversion run failed and the teams enter the final period tied at 14-14.

Brito scored the winning touchdown from a yard out with only 18 seconds remaining to seal the victory. The play followed a fourth down, 24-yard pass from Taylor to Brandon McDonald who was stopped at the Warrior one. T.J. Koonce ran for the two-point conversion to complete the scoring.

WHS Freshmen 30 Alchesay 22

The Winslow freshman football team defeated Alchesay 30-22 in a game played on Thursday in Winslow. The victory left the Bulldogs with a 2-3 record after a 13-0 loss to Blue Ridge on Sept. 27 and Thursday's victory over Alchesay.

Alchesay scored first on a 56-yard run by Marco Baylish mid-way through the first quarter. Emery Walker ran for the two-point conversion and an 8-0 Falcon lead.

The Bulldogs cut the margin to 8-6 when Jeff Murray passed 19 yards to Trey DeWitt with 15 seconds left in the period. Alchesay's lead held as the conversion run failed.

DeWitt put the Bulldogs on top with a 49-yard return of a fumbled lateral. The run failed again and Winslow led 12-8 with 4:40 left to the intermission.

Only nine seconds were showing when Murray hit Mark Spencer from 15 yards out. The conversion run failed and Winslow led 18-8 at the half.

The Bulldogs drove 67 yards to score with 2:53 left in the third quarter. Warren Prosser darted 15 yards on a reverse to give the 'Dogs a 24-8 lead after the conversion failed.

Baylish ran 30 yards to score on the first play of the fourth quarter. The run failed and Winslow still led 24-14.

A 67-yard run by Baylish with 8:26 left in the game allowed Alchesay to cut the lead to 24-22 after Walker ran for a two-point conversion.

Angelo Tsosie took the Bulldogs on a time-consuming drive that ended with his four-yard touchdown run with only nine seconds showing on the clock. The run failed and the 30-22 final score was in the books.
