Bulldogs 14 Mustangs 0

The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Monument Valley Mustangs 14-0 in an Enchantment Region football game played at Kayenta on Friday. The victory allowed the Bulldogs to improve their season record to 3-1 and their regional record to 2-0. Monument Valley fell to 1-3 for the season and 1-1 in the region.

The first half was a defensive struggle with neither team able to mount a scoring threat or display much offense until Winslow recovered a Mustang fumble at the Monument Valley 28-yard line with just over two minutes left in the half. Seven plays later quarterback Steve Martinez was in the end zone on a five-yard run. Brandon Nazario booted the conversion kick and the Bulldogs led 7-0 with only 30 seconds left until intermission.

The Winslow defense rose to the occasion and withstood a huge Mustang threat in the second half. The Mustangs were turned away only two yards from the Bulldog end zone.

Winslow defensive lineman William "Bear" Beamon recovered a fumble in the Monument Valley end zone with only 3:23 left in the contest for the only score of the second half. It marked the second straight week that Beamon has recorded a defensive touchdown. He stole the ball from a Pinon ball carrier on Sept. 15 and scored. Nazario's conversion was the final point in Winslow's 14-0 victory.

The Bulldogs will celebrate their Homecoming Game on Friday by entertaining the Window Rock Scouts. Monument Valley will be on the road at the Pinon Eagles. The results of the Window Rock-Pinon game had not been reported at press time.
