Lady Warriors defeat River Valley 6-5, lose to Sahuarita
The Tuba City Lady Warriors roared from five runs behind in the sixth inning to defeat the River Valley Lady Dust Devils 6-5 in an opening round game of the Arizona State 3A Softball Championship Tournament played on Friday in Phoenix.
River Valley took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a single and an error, then improved their margin to 2-0 in the fourth on a pair of singles.
The Lady Dust Devils scored two more in the fifth inning on a triple and three singles to lead 4-0.
The margin grew to a seemingly commanding 5-0 in the top of the sixth on an error and two more singles.
The Lady Warrior got back into the game in the bottom of the sixth when they scored four times to cut the margin to a single run at 5-4. Tina Gallegos singled, there was a walk and Cindy Wilson delivered a three-run home run to get Tuba City within two. Kerri Tussawana then tripled and later scored the fourth run of the inning.
Wilson shutout the Lady Dust Devils in the top of the seventh to set the stage for the game-winning rally. A pair of walks put the tying and winning runs on base and Sky Reed delivered the single that brought them home and secured the Lady Warrior victory.
Tussawana had a triple in two trips to the plate for Tuba City. Wilson had her all important homer in three trips. Reed had her game-winning hit in two at bats. Therea Crank was one for three. Gallegos was one for four.
The Lady Warriors couldn’t solve the Sahuarita Lady Mustangs on Saturday, though, and fell 11-0 in a game shortened due to the 10-run mercy rule. Sahuarita exploded for six runs in the first inning and added three more in the second. Single tallies in the third and fourth innings completed the scoring. Tuba City went hitless and managed only a pair of walks for the contest.

The Seton Catholic Lady Sentinels defeated the Window Rock Lady Scouts 8-7 in a first round game of the Arizona State 3A Softball Championship Tournament played in Phoenix on Friday. The loss eliminated the Lady Scouts.
Window Rock took its only lead of the contest 1-0 in the top of the first inning on a single by Terri Slinkey and a Seton error.
The Lady Sentinels exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first for a 5-1 lead that Window Rock never quite made up. Three singles and a double by Kim Zadrozny, a triple by Kim Cockrum and two errors accounted for the scoring.
An error and a single by Danielle Smith allowed the Lady Scouts to cut the margin to 5-2 in the top of the fourth. Seton got that run back in the bottom of the frame, though, on a single, an error and Zadrozny’s second double of the game.
The teams also traded runs in the fifth inning as Window Rock scored on a single by Erica Damon and an error to cut the margin to 6-3, only to see the Lady Sentinels up the margin to 7-3 on a Wilkens single.
The Lady Scouts got within striking distance with a three-run top of the sixth that left Seton clinging to a 7-6 lead. Singles by Smith, Monica Nelson, Slinkey and Tivona Begay fueled the Window Rock rally.
Zadrozny homered with two out in the bottom of the sixth for her third extra-base hit of the contest and an 8-6 Seton Catholic lead.
Window Rock scored one run on an error and Smith’s third hit of the game in the seventh, but she was stranded at first as the final batter fanned.
Slinkey and Smith were each three for four for Window Rock. Damon was one for three. Nelson and Begay were each one for four.
