The Ganado High School Lady Hornets softball team won only one of five games at the 3A East Region Tournament in Snowflake on April 14 and 15, but the girls did enough to impress observers with their good sportsmanship and competitiveness.
On Friday the Ganado girls found themselves in one of the tournaments toughest brackets with Winslow, Joseph City (which began tournament play undefeated) and Payson. All three teams entered play either leading or tied for the lead in their respective regions. Ganado played very well in a loss to Joseph City in their opener in what was probably the best played game of the day. A loss to Payson followed. The Lady Hornets regrouped and led Winslow most of the game before falling 9-8 in the final inning.
Ganado met 4A Page in the fourth place bracket on Saturday and fell to the mighty Sand Devils 19-0. Page eventually won this bracket with a narrow 3-2 victory over Holbrook.
The Lady Hornets picked up their lone win of the tournament in the third place game for their bracket when they edged the Alchesay Lady Falcons 6-5. Ganado took an early lead and held off Alchesayís come-back effort for the victory.
Officials congratulated the Ganado team and coaching staff on their outstanding sportsmanship. The umpires who worked their contests were heard to say that if a sportsmanship award had been given the Lady Hornets would have won it hands down.
