Chamber announces Candyland Christmas theme for the Christmas Parade

In its July meeting the Board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce announced that the theme for this year's Christmas Parade will be Candyland Christmas. Janice Griffith and Bob Hall will co-chair the event this year and they are planning ways to make it better than ever. The committee asked the other board members for ideas for the Grand Marshal. "Let's honor one of our own," Janice Griffith said.

This year there will be plaques for prize entries and all the entries will be required to be decorated. The committee hopes to increase the number of entries from Winslow businesses in keeping with the original idea of the parade as a kick-off to the holiday shopping season.

The Chamber's annual Auction will be held September 15 at La Posada. "It's a fun night," Judy Musch said. Musch, who chairs this event for the Chamber, also said that the evening will have a cowboy theme, with a barbeque and ranch beans dinner catered by Sue's Family Restaurant. Jeff Hancock will be the auctioneer and there is already one special donation: a signed Cardinal's helmet. Letters have gone out for other donations and local businesses are encouraged to participate.

In other business the Chamber voted to tell the Skateboard Park board that they did not have the funds to donate to construction of the park. They offered to participate in funding events that fit with the Chamber's mission of encouraging tourism and promoting Winslow.

The Winslow Classic Roping Series made a presentation to the Chamber and it was recognized that this has been an ongoing event in Winslow over the years. It is a growing series using three sites and giving prizes to monthly winners.

The Camber Ambassadors proposed the recognition of businesses for their civic participation on a monthly basis, leading to a business of the year award. There was a discussion of the monthly luncheons and a proposal that these events, whether breakfasts or luncheons become quarterly. Monthly seems to become stale no mater what the event.

Frank Cuellar of Cake Chevrolet accepted the chairmanship of the budget committee with a new charge. They will review the budget for the Chamber and set up initiatives. Serving with him will be Board Treasurer Judy Douglas, and members Allan Affeldt of La Posada, Shelly Cunningham of Wal Mart, Dan Simmons of Simmons Realty and Stephanie Lugo of Farmers Insurance Group.
