Lady Bulldogs 43 Blue Ridge 32

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Blue Ridge Lady Yellowjackets 43-32 in first round action of the Winslow Winter Classic on Thursday. The win left Winslow with a 7 -1 for the season.

The Lady Bulldogs held Blue Ridge scoreless in the first period as they constructed a 9-0 lead that was never threatened. The margin was 23-10 at the intermission and 37-21 after three quarters.

Francine McCurtain was the game's high scorer with 19 points for Winslow. Melissa Francis paced Blue Ridge with 11 points.

Lady Bulldogs vs. Seton Catholic, Desert Vista

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs handled Seton Catholic with ease 58-44 in their first test on Friday, but dropped a tough, overtime game to 5A Desert Vista 56-54 that night. The split left Winslow with an 8-2 record for the season.

Francine McCurtain paced the Lady Bulldogs against Seton with 14 points. Faith Carpenter with 12 points and Kellie Willie with 10 were also in double figures for Winslow. Alana Wirth led Seton with 10 points.

Desert Vista erased a seven point Winslow lead in the last three minutes of regulation play to force an overtime period. The Lady Thunder had led 17-15 after the first period and 29-26 at the intermission but Winslow led 41-37 after three periods.

Neither team got much scoring from their bench as only four Lady Bulldogs and five Lady Thunder players cracked the scoring column. Alexis Welch of Desert Vista was the game's high scorer with 26 points. Francine McCurtain had 23 to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Michelle Long with 13, Jade Bale and Nadia Pineda with seven points each and T. Winston with two points completed the Desert Vista scoring. Lexine Jensen with 15 points and Nicole Begaii with 12 were both in double figures for Winslow, but Faith Carpenter with four points was the only other Lady Bulldog to score.

Lady Bulldogs 68 Gilbert Highlands 55

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Gilbert Highlands Lady Hawks 68-55 on Saturday to claim fifth place in the Winslow Winter Classic Tournament. The victory left Winslow with a record of 9-2 for the season and 1-0 in the Enchantment Region.

Winslow led after every period as they steadily pulled away from the Lady Hawks. The first period lead of 15-13 had increased to 31-25 by the intermission and 50-36 after three periods.

Francine McCurtain paced the Lady Bulldogs with 23 points. Lexine Jensen with 17 points and Faith Carpenter with 13 were also in double figures for the victors. Nicole Begaii added nine points for Winslow.

Erin O'Bryan paced Highlands with 21 points. K.T. Creech with 11 points and Amy Bluth with 10 were also in double figures for the Lady Hawks.

Corona Winslow Winter Classic Champs, Lady Warriors Second, Window Rock Third

The Corona del Sol Lady Aztecs used their superior height, speed and skill to destroy their first three victims in blow-out games, but were pressed to secure their Winslow Winter Classic Championship with a 54-49 win over the scrappy, never say die Tuba City Lady Warriors on Saturday.

Corona has three girls over six feet tall and six who stand 5' 10" or better. They were, amazingly, one of the quickest teams in the tournament as well. The Lady Aztecs breezed past Hopi 86-33, Page 52-35 and Desert Vista 56-35 before being tested by the defending Arizona State 3A Champion Tuba City Lady Warriors.

Lindsay McClelland paced the victors with 17 points. Alexis Timpane was also in double figures with 14 points.

Tuba City had three players in double figures led by Nicole Tsingine with 14 points. Sharlimar Navajo with 11 points and Amy North with 10 were also in double digits. Tuba City earned its way into the finals with victories over Coconino 52-37, Pinon 47-38, Gilbert Highlands 55-42 and Window Rock 65-56.

The most impressive win for the Lady Warriors was the 55-42 victory over a good 5A Gilbert Highlands squad. Amy North paced the Lady Warriors in their 65-56 win over Window Rock with 20 points. Jayme Lomakema scored 19 and Tsingine 11 for the victors.

Roberta Hoskie paced Window Rock with 23 points. Treva Jim scored 21 and Adriana Chee added 10 for the Lady Scouts who were the surprise team of the tournament. Window Rock came back to take third place with an impressive 46-34 win over 5A Desert Vista.

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs garnered fifth place with an impressive 68-55 win over Gilbert Highlands. Winslow led after each period and steadily pulled away from the Lady Hawks.

The Winslow Winter Classic All Tournament Team included Francine McCurtain and Lexine Jensen from Winslow; Tammy Secody, Jayme Lomakema and Amy North from Tuba City; Lenelle Tahe from Flagstaff; Charmayne Johnson from Coconino; Andian Chee and Roberta Haskie of Window Rock; Lorena Sullivan and Miranda Todachine of Monument Valley; Tiffany Jesperson and Erin O'Bryan of Gilbert Highlands; Melissa Jones of Ganado; Charae Cook of Snowflake; Alexis Timpone, Lindsay McClellan and Nikki Revling of Corona del Sol and Tara Redding and Alexis Welch of Desert Vista.
