Lady Aztecs 54 Lady Warriors 49

The Corona del Sol Lady Aztecs used their superior height, speed and skill to destroy their first three victims in blow-out games, but were pressed to secure their Winslow Winter Classic Championship with a 54-49 win over the scrappy, never say die Tuba City Lady Warriors on Saturday.

Corona has three girls over six feet tall and six who stand 5' 10" or better. They were, amazingly, one of the quickest teams in the tournament as well. The Lady Aztecs breezed past Hopi 86-33, Page 52-35 and Desert Vista 56-35 before being tested by the defending Arizona State 3A Champion Tuba City Lady Warriors.

Lindsay McClelland paced the victors with 17 points. Alexis Timpane was also in double figures with 14 points.

Tuba City had three players in double figures led by Nicole Tsingine with 14 points. Sharlimar Navajo with 11 points and Amy North with 10 were also in double digits.

Tuba City earned its way into the finals with victories over Coconino 52-37, Pinon 47-38, Gilbert Highlands 55-42 and Window Rock 65-56.

The most impressive win for the Lady Warriors was the 55-42 victory over a good 5A Gilbert Highlands squad. Four Lady Warriors wound up in double digits for that contest as Nicole Tsingine and Amy North shared scoring honors with 12 points each. Tammy Secody scored 11 points. Jayme Lomakema finished with 10 points.

North paced the Lady Warriors in their 65-56 win over Window Rock with 20 points. Lomakema scored 19 and Tsingine 11 for the victors.

Roberta Hoskie paced Window Rock with 23 points. Treva Jim scored 21 and Adriana Chee added 10 for the Lady Scouts who were the surprise team of the tournament.

Window Rock came back to take third place with an impressive 46-34 win over 5A Desert Vista. Hoskie paced the Lady Scouts with 13 points despite her spending nearly half the game on the bench with foul trouble. Chee tallied 12 points for the victors. Jade Abel was in double figures for Desert Vista with 16 points.

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs garnered fifth place with an impressive 68-55 win over Gilbert Highlands. Winslow led after each period and steadily pulled away from the Lady Hawks.

Francine McCurtain paced Winslow with 23 points. Lexine Jensen added 17 and Faith Carpenter had 13 for the victors.
