Flagstaff Eagles win state title

GILBERT — Prescott’s Jennifer Klein edged out Flagstaff’s Annie Falor for the individual state cross country championship, but Falor was still so happy that she was crying because the Eagles won the 4A state title.

Klein won the race in 19:33 and Falor came in five seconds later after the two ran neck and neck through most of the race.

Flagstaff scored 76 points to win the race by placing its top five runners in the top 25. Page grabbed second with 113. Chinle, Prescott and Scottsdale Chaparral tied for third with 177 points each in the 21 team race.

The top five runners for state champion Flagstaff were Klein; Amber Gordon, 11th (20:24); Kristina Acothley, 23rd (20:54); Jean Marie Loverich, 24th (20:55); and Allison Wine, 27th (21:02).

The top five runners for second place Page were Sheena Scott, fourth (19:56); Samantha Spencer, eighth (20:04); Valleen Redhair, 25th (20:58); Sarah Barry, 32nd (21:15), and Ashley Roundtree, 56th (22:13).

The top five runners for third place for Chinle were Kristen St. Germaine, ninth (20:18); Doreen Anderson, 31st (21:14); Colleen Yazzie, 51st (22”03); Andrea Yazzie, 52nd (22:07) and Gayla Montano, 53rd (22:07).

Falor said she was thrilled and ecstatic with winning the state team title.

“We worked so hard and it was awesome. Kristina Acothley should get the credit for leading us,” she said.

Falor had run against Klein once earlier this season and was whipped by her in that race. “This was a lot closer. She’s a great competitor. I have lot of respect for her and congratulate her on her state championship,” she said.
