The Ganado Hornets will begin defense of their Enchantment Region (3A North) crown with Coach Russ Semore at the helm for his third season in Ganado. Semore's sons seniors Chris and Jason have been stalwarts for both of his Ganado teams and were key members of the Winslow Bulldogs as freshmen when he was the coach there. Ganado won the regional title with a perfect 6-0 record and was 9-2 for the season, including the region's only state play-off win. The Hornets will be at 4A Chinle on Friday for the season opener. Ganado is a senior dominated team with the two Semores, Cody Mueller, Almon Nelson, Travis Johnson, Ryan Wauneka, Sean Nez and Sterling Cornfield back for their final year. Lavon Salabye and Kasey Black are juniors who saw considerable action as sophomores.
Winslow finished second in the region with a 5-1 regional record and a 7-3 mark for the season. The Bulldogs will welcome a new coach in Matthew Gracey and are expected to feature strong line play and a host of talented runningbacks. The Bulldogs will open the season on the road against their old rival Holbrook of the 3A East Region.
