The Winslow High School Lady Bulldogs completed a highly successful summer program by finishing 17 out of 110 schools in their division of the 322 team San Diego Classic Girls Basketball Tournament in mid-July. Winslow won five games and lost only one in the tournament and finished the summer with an impressive record of 21-2.
During tournament pool play at San Diego, Winslow defeated Crawford High School of San Diego 42-36, Talacema High School (a suburb of San Diego) 34-31 and Cholla High School of Tucson 46-26. The Lady Bulldogs lost to Huntington Beach High School of Los Angeles in the qualifying round championship game 49-10 and was placed in a second place pool. There they defeated Del Norte High School of Riverside 38-32 in their final contest of the tournament.
Winslow will field a talented team that finished as Arizona State 3A Conference Runners-up in 2000 with a 23-8 record. They will be anchored by senior All State selection point guard Francine McCurtain and junior center Faith Carpenter. Sophomores Daphne Barton, Camell Begay, Nicole Begaii and Kelley Willie are also experienced and talented veterans despite their youth.
