Moenkopi Senior Center Field Day Thursday and Friday

The Moenkopi Senior Center, Inc. 7th Annual Field Day Event is open for any senior 55 years of age or older. The event takes place Sept. 18-19 at 9 a.m. both days.

Anyone who wants to make a water donation for both days can contact Claudina Burgener or Derick Lomayokva at (928) 283-8025 or just drop water off at the Moenkopi Senior Center.

Ms. Flatbed Ford competition Saturday in Winslow

The Standin' on the Corner Foundation is sponsoring the Ms. Flatbed Ford - Scholarship competition Sept. 20 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at PT's Patio.

The competition is open to any Winslow, Northland Pioneer College, Winslow High School or Winslow Academy students. All students must be 16 years of age or older with school identification.

Each competitor must write a 500-word essay on what makes Winslow great. The essay must be submitted with the application.

Attire for the competition - competitors must wear an outfit that best represents Ms. Flatbed Ford to them.

Each talent should be 2-3 minutes. Each participant must supply their own music and props. (Safety first - no knife juggling or flame throwing).

Competitors will be required to draw one of these questions out of a hat at the competition and will get bonus points for all correct answers on the questionnaire - everyone should make sure they know their Winslow and Standin' on the Corner trivia.

Applications and trivia questionnaires are available at the Winslow Chamber of Commerce/Visitor's Center and must be turned in no later than noon Sept. 19.

October Breast Cancer Awareness Kick-Off Walk

The Hopi Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program will put on a walk to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) Oct. 1, 2014.

The start of the walk is at the intersection of SR 264 and the road to the Hopi Day School in Kykostmovi, Arizona. Registration will be at the intersection beginning at 8 a.m. (MST). The walk starts at 9 a.m. (MST) and ends at the HOPI Cancer Support Services office across from the Hopi Tribal Complex. A small ceremony including a reading of the BCAM proclamation will take place with a light breakfast afterward. It's time to "Think Pink." More information is available by calling (928) 734-1151.

Girls Night Out on Hopi Oct. 16

The Hopi Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program announces "Girl's Night Out" (GNO) slated for Oct. 16 at the Hopi Veterans Memorial Center (HVMC) in Kykotsmovi, Arizona. Women enrolled in the "Screening Program" who plan to attend GNO should call (928) 734-1150 or 1151 to RSVP by 5 p.m. (MST) on Oct. 14. Participants can bring one female guest 12 years and older who is not enrolled in the program. Please also provide the name of the guest when calling in to RSVP.

The theme this year is "Spice Up Your Life; Get Screened" and women are asked to dress in Mexican style clothing for 2014 GNO. In line with the theme, those interested can enter a Salsa Contest. Three prizes will be given to the top tastiest entries. All entries need to be at the HVMC by 5:30 p.m. (MST) Oct. 16. More information is available at (928) 734-1150 or 1151.

Hopi Special Diabetes run Oct. 5

The Hopi Special Diabetes program is sponsoring the 2014 TAAWAKI Trail Run Lomat Ovi Nanmungwa - "Celebrating the Hopi Running Tradition."

The half marathon, 10K and 8K, takes place Oct. 5 at the Hopi Veteran's Memorial Center (Hwy 64, milepost 375.5, northeast of Kykotsmovi Village).

Registration time is at 6 a.m. and the event begins at 7 a.m.

The half marathon registration deadline is Oct. 4 by 5 p.m.

Junior golf camp Oct. 11

Registration for the Notah Begay, III Foundation (NB3F) Junior Golf Camp takes place on Saturdays at the following dates and times:

Sept. 27 and Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Holbrook Safeway.

The Junior Golf Camp takes place Oct. 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with lunch provided at 12:30 p.m.

The cost of the camp is $30 (lunch is included in the cost) per participant ages 6 -18.

The Notah Begay III Foundation ("NB3F") is providing a Junior Golf Camp to area Indian country children and local youth ages 6 -18, based upon the Begay Family Golf philosophy. Begay Family Golf philosophy includes golf etiquette, basic golf components (driving, mid-range, pitching, chipping and putting) and healthy nutrition and its partnership with golf. NB3F coaches from Albuquerque, New Mexico will be traveling to Holbrook to work with participants. Golf also provides opportunities for college scholarships.

Call for nominations: 4th annual "Justin Boyd Willie Agricultural Humanitarian of the Year Award"

The Peshlakai Cultural Foundation, Dine Inc., North Leupp Family Farms, Tolani Lake Enterprise, the Willie Family and the Redhouse Clan of the Navajo are accepting nominations of outstanding indigenous agricultural humanitarians.

Submissions of candidates will be accepted until 5 p.m. Sept. 21 and the selection of the recipient takes place on Sept. 28.

The deserving recipient will be an indigenous person who has contributed selflessly through community service in northern Arizona and beyond among Native American communities and lands. The nominee should have contributed to the teaching of cultural preservation and traditions through indigenous agriculture volunteer activities with youth, elders and communities in Indian country.
