Winslow dominates Holbrook in season opening win

Bulldogs take on Blue Ridge after 44-8 home field win

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs opened their 2014 season with a 44-8 victory over the Holbrook Roadrunners at Holbrook Aug. 29

The Bulldogs traveled to Pinetop to meet the always tough Blue Ridge Yellowjackets Sept. 5. Blue Ridge is 0-2 for the young season with a 30-8 loss to the Sahuarita Mustangs at Sahuarita to open their season and a 55-7 home field drubbing at the hands of the Prescott Badgers.

Winslow started strong and opened the scoring when Austyn Maddox scooped up a Holbrook fumble and raced 75 yards for a defensive touchdown. The conversion by C. J. Chacon put the Bulldogs on top 7-0.

The Bulldogs increased the margin to 13-0 when Nick Marquez ran 51 yards for a touchdown. Holbrook blocked the conversion attempt.

The Roadrunners stopped a Winslow drive at the one yard line but the Bulldogs tackled the Roadrunner ball carrier in the end zone for a safety and a 15-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The only score of the second quarter came on an eight-yard run by Chacon. Akkeem Foster ran for the two point conversion to make a 23-0 Winslow half time lead.

The first score of the third quarter was Winslow's second safety as they gang tackled a Roadrunner in the end zone.

Chacon got his second touchdown of the game on an eight-yard run. Winslow led 31-0 after the conversion failed. The third quarter ended with that score on the boards.

The Bulldogs drove 63 yards to score early in the fourth quarter on a five-yard run by Darrien "Peanut" Brown. The conversion failed and Winslow led 37-0.

Foster scored his second touchdown of the game on a 39-yard run and Chacon converted to increase the lead to 44-0.

The Holbrook Roadrunners scored the final touchdown of the game on a 34-yard pass from Cade Maestas to Wazuri Waits.  Waits scored the two point conversion making the final score 44-8 in favor of the Bulldogs.
