PAGE, Ariz. - Coconino Community College (CCC) officials have begun implementing the Financial Austerity Plan for the Page campus that the CCC District Governing Board approved in March to close its $1.3 million budget gap.
In addition to generating money through tuition increases and fees, one of the options on the table was to close the Page campus entirely. After comments from Page residents and the board's guiding principles of serving the entire county, board members opted to convert the CCC Page campus to an instructional site, rather than close the campus entirely.
"We listened to the concerns of Page residents in reference to closing the campus and decided that we can still serve the area with the new model," said District Governing Board Member Lloyd Hammonds. "It is unfortunate that we had to scale back our workforce to balance the budget during these difficult times. We are fully aware of the impact that it has had on those employees that have had positions eliminated."
Enrollment numbers have dropped for several years at CCC's Page campus. Community surveys showed that Page area residents are looking for more evening classes and online opportunities to accommodate work and family responsibilities.
The converted instructional campus will focus on student needs with the goal of increasing the number of associate degrees earned in the area.
The staff at the Page campus will be reduced to two full-time positions, the director and a student services coordinator. An enrollment specialist, who will remain full-time through December 2014, will become a part-time position in January 2015.
The instructional site will not employ any full-time instructors. A work group made up of college staff will work on scheduling details and staff duties.
"We are still working on the details, but we believe that we can offer Page residents and others in the outlying areas of northern Coconino County the opportunity to earn a basic Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) associate degree without ever having to leave the area," said Page Campus Director Jim Hunter.
According to Hunter, the goal is for Page area students to earn AGEC credits through a variety of instructional tools which will include a combination of traditional in-room instruction, interactive television classes (ITV), online instruction and other tools.
If students transfer to one of the three Arizona state universities, AGEC coursework applies toward a bachelor's degree. The AGEC is the foundation of a community college education. It consists of 35-37 credits which include:
arts and humanities;
social and behavioral sciences;
physical and biological sciences; and
other options (these will vary by community college and AGEC completed).
"We continue our commitment to serving all of the residents of northern Arizona," said CCC Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Russ Rothamer. "Distance learning, face-to-face instruction and a strategic offering of general education courses will allow our students to be successful in their educational endeavors."
