Erosion damages many roads on Kaibab Plateau, some routes impassable

Recent heavy monsoonal rains caused significant damage to roads on the west side of the Kaibab Plateau, making some routes impassable and many very difficult, even for trucks.

The North Kaibab Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest is urging motorists to use caution when driving on forest roads, especially lower elevation roads across highly erodible soils.

Instances of deep erosion ocurred on FR234, FR235, FR236, and FR423, which are the main roads used to access western points of interest like Jumpup Cabin, Jumpup Point, Slide Spring and fall deer hunting camps.

Forecasts called for more rain this past weekend across parts of the Kaibab Plateau, which could have led to more erosion, but would also create wet and muddy driving conditions and greater chances for getting stuck.

The Forest Service asks motorists to use caution when travelling on these forest roads and to consider the ruts and other negative effects that vehicles can leave on wet, muddy roads during the rainy season.
